Marc Faber: Driving Motorcycles in Thailand is One of the most dangerous things to do in life

"I always tell people I'm a great optimist," Dr. Marc Faber said Wednesday in an interview on CNBC's "Trading Nation." "One of the most dangerous things to do in life is to drive motorcycles in Thailand. And I have five motorcycles."

"I'm most gloomy about the prospects of the global economy, but it doesn't mean that markets will go down," Faber said, thanks to "mad professors at central banks"

Not a good time to Buy Real Estate in Thailand

Marc Faber said he put 25 per cent of his money in stocks in Europe, Canada, and Asian markets including Thailand, which accounts for the largest chunk of his equity holding in the region. He also believes investors should allocate another 25 per cent of their assets to gold and gold-mining stocks, as the price of the precious commodity is "in the process of bottoming out". As to real-estate investment, Vietnam is very interesting. But it's not a good time to buy real estate in Thailand, including in his hometown of Chiang Mai, where some properties may experience a 30-per-cent price drop.

Money is flowing out of countries like Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand into India

Q: This week in itself we have seen the Indian markets outperform the rest of the emerging market on the back of the domestic event, the state election verdict in anticipation of a favourable verdict there. If it actually does materialize is there a possibility that Indian markets might outperform the other emerging markets?

Marc Faber : I just explained to you that the Indian market is still down 40 percent in dollar terms from the 2008 high; whereas other markets like Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Philippines were up until May by about 4 times from the 2009 lows. So we had an underperformance of India compared to other emerging economies until recently. And we have this pool of international liquidity that is driven by asset allocators, so they look at India - they see a relative poor performance and they see some marginal improvement in the macroeconomic environment of India. So money is flowing out of countries like Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand into India.

Indonesia & Thailand Markets : There has been a huge Correction from the recent Highs

ET Now: Now that the emerging markets have corrected, do you think it is time to revisit emerging market equities or global equities?

Marc Faber: We have to look at each emerging market separately because of the diverging performances. Since 2009 we have seen great performances in the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, where markets went up by three to four times. On the other hand are markets like India, Brazil or Russia, which are still down in dollar terms by 50% from their highs. Therefore, each emerging market is in a different position at the moment.
In my view, there has been a huge correction in Indonesia and Thailand from the recent highs. The market is down by around 30-35% from the April-May high, but following a rebound, we will see further weakness.
Indian stocks, because of the currency weakness, have already experienced a very substantial bear market. It may last a little longer, but we surely are coming into a buying range.

Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, do not have huge downward risks

"Between now and then, there will be opportunity in various asset classes. I recommend the investors to take a balanced approach to invest in equity, corporate bond, real-estate and gold," Faber told his audience during a luncheon talk organised by MIDF Amanah Investment Bank Bhd.
While he believes that equity prices are not likely to go up significantly from current levels, investors should keep their holdings in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, as these markets do not have huge downward risks. - in The Sun Daily
